Tunisia, Rich of Roman History

TUNISIA SOUSSETunisia a country in North Africa with a coast along the Mediterranean has a very strong history and diverse natural beauties. Tunisia has beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean coast and it is a prime territory for a sun-sand-and-sea holiday. It has much more to offer than those though.. Here, you will find a stylish blend of distinct cultures and can explore incredible extremes of landscape in only a short time.

Tunisia is rich in history with plenty to see and do. If you are a lover of things such as or “the Star Wars”, Romans and history for instance, Tunisia is a must destination to visit.

Public transportation including trains, buses, louages(service taxi) is quite efficient.

Two main tourist resorts in Tunisia are Hammamet and Port El Kantoui/Sousse.

Sousse is a good base as it’s a decent sized town with all the amenities to hand and beautiful beaches. Sousse has a great position, because it’s approximately in the middle of the country and it’s a fine city in itself, despite the mass tourism. You can make day trips from Sousse every day by train or bus. It has a rail link to Tunis and Hammamet, as well.

A day trip to The Roman Colosseum of El-Jem, the third biggest Colosseum after Rome.
The Grand Mosque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Medina and Rabat are fantastic. You can also visit El Djem, a very impressive Colosseum – the 3rd biggest in the roman empire) and from there Kairouan (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites).

Dougga, situated south west of Tunis Capital was a town roughly of 10000 inhabitants in its day.

Today you can visit Dougga and even walk in the streets (houses are in ruins, but the streets remain) through the town. Tabursuq and Nouvelle Dougga are the nearest villages or small towns. In fact it is much more interesting and better preserved than Carthage(which is also a must see).

Among other places worth seeing are the amphitheater in EL Jem, Bardo Museum in Tunis and Archeological Museum in Sousse. Talking about other Roman ruins there are plenty more such as Sbeitla, Bulla Regia, the aquaeduct of Zaghuan.

Generally speaking, people are quite friendly and hospitable. One should watch out for shop owners who are very pleasant when they sell and can turn very aggressive if they cannot.
